Next Floor, Please

Words to Treasure

While our sons are young, they will be like healthy plants. Our daughters will be like pillars that have been made to decorate a palace.

Psalm 144:12

Tiffany walked into the girl’s washroom and stopped. There was her friend Anne, leaning close to the bathroom mirror, putting on eye makeup. She already had lipstick and blush on. “Where did you get that? Your parents don’t want you to wear makeup yet!”

Annie put on a little more eye shadow in another color that had glitter in it — way too much. “I want to look like a teenager.”

Tiffany looked at her friend’s face. “Well, I never saw a teenager who looked that, ummm, colorful. Maybe you should learn how to use makeup first. You look like somebody’s color-by-numbers picture. You’re sort of a makeup explosion.”

Annie studied her reflection in horror. “Really?”

Mrs. Cole walked in and took one look at Annie. “Oh, dear.”

Next floor: makeup, high heels, and boyfriends — but not yet. Trying to be older means you will miss out on all the fun things that happen at the age you are now. Go ahead and have fun and be who you are now, and not someone you will be in a few years.

Did you know that in ancient Israel both women and men wore makeup and used perfume? Some kinds of eye makeup helped to keep flies from their faces. Now that’s multi-purpose.
