Words to Treasure
You are the salt of the earth.
Matthew 5:13
Jerry waded around in the thick waters of the Dead Sea. A man warned him not to go in if he had any cuts because the salt in the water would really sting. No cuts, so he was good to go. He knew the Dead Sea was way saltier than the ocean, but he was surprised by how slippery and oily the water felt. This was crazy thick water. Jerry lay back in the water like the other swimmers. His dad handed him a comic book, and Jerry let the salty water keep him afloat with no swimming needed. He just sat back and relaxed while his mom took a photograph. His dad gave him a little splash, and suddenly Jerry’s eye stung like crazy. “Dad!” The salty water had gotten in his eye. Jerry ran for his towel and bottled water. “Hey, that stings!”
“Sorry, kiddo, I forgot.”
The Dead Sea is actually a salt lake that was once part of the ocean a long, long time ago. The lake has been shrinking over the years. In the Bible, the Dead Sea is also called the Salt Sea. People call it dead because the water is so full of minerals that animals can’t live in it. No fish or anything. People have been visiting this Bible spot for thousands of years.
Ancient people used salt to add flavor to food and also to preserve and dry out things like fish. Salt was so valuable that ancient people often used it like money. Being the salt of the earth means you’re special and indispensable.
