Helping Kids Be Kids

Words to Treasure

But you have not practiced the more important things of the law, which are fairness, mercy and faithfulness.

Matthew 23:23

Brendon looked at all the toys on the store shelves. He had birthday money in his pocket and knew where to spend it. His uncle Toby stood beside him and examined a box. “Hey sport! Is that the birthday gift you want to buy?”

Brendon glanced at him, “This is the one. This is the perfect gift.”

“Do you ever research toys?”

“Sure, I ask my friends what they like.” Brendon picked up another box.

Uncle Toby pointed to the box Brendon was holding. “I’m looking at where this toy was made. I try to choose toys that were made in fair ways. Some kids in the world don’t get to play with toys. They spend their time in factories making toys.”

Brendon looked concerned. “Kids shouldn’t have to work in factories.”

Uncle Toby shook his head sadly. “I know,” he said. “That’s why I try to do a little research before I buy something.”

In some countries, kids have to work like adults do. When you buy toys or clothes, you can actually purchase them from companies that are fair to everybody. By doing this, you can help a kid you don’t even know by buying with care.

Live It!

The Bible talks about fairness. That means making decisions or choices that are good and right for everybody, not just for a few people. Are you fair in the way you treat other people? Talk about it with your family.
