Words to Treasure
But your proud heart has tricked you.
Obadiah 1:3
Denny was giving a great talk to the little kids at Sunday school. He looked good and sounded really smart. Denny was feeling pretty proud and impressed with himself. “Do you have any questions?”
A little girl raised her hand. “How come you have gum stuck in your hair?”
Denny touched his head, and she was right — there was gum in his hair. He turned beet red. “I don’t know why. Maybe because this morning I thought I was so much older and smarter than you. But none of you have gum in your hair do you?” They giggled. “Looks like you’re smarter and cooler than me. I don’t have it all together like I thought.”
Everybody is just stumbling along, learning about God and trying to do the right things. Nobody (not even your pastor) has it all together. Let’s learn about God together. Remember that the next time you think you’re so great. You may have gum in your hair and not know it.
Jesus asked the disciples what they had argued about while they were walking along. They grew kind of quiet because they had argued about which one of them was the most important person in the group. Jesus explained that if you want to be the first, you have to be willing to be the last. In other words, stop worrying about being the greatest. Being humble, helpful, and honest are great attitudes. (See Mark 9:33 – 35.)
