Words to Treasure
Anyone who has my commands and obeys them loves me. My Father will love the one who loves me. I too will love them. And I will show myself to them.
John 14:21
The lifeguard put a bandage on Janna’s forehead. “I called your mom, and she’s coming to pick you up. You have a nasty bump on your head.” The birthday party wasn’t over for another hour, but it was over for Janna. The lifeguard checked her again. “You did see the No Running sign on the pool deck?” Janna nodded. “And you did hear me warn you twice not to run?”
“Yes,” Janna wrapped her towel closer.
“But you kept running anyway.”
“Yes. I kinda forgot because we were having so much fun.”
“Now you know why we have that rule, right?”
“Because you will fall on your face in front of an entire pool full of kids and look like a dweeb and get a bump on your face the size of a golf ball,” Janna said. There’s a really good reason for rules. Most rules are there not to wreck our fun but to keep us safe. God’s got rules for us too, and they’re there for the same reason — to keep us safe. Just think of the world as God’s pool party — we can have fun and live right at the same time.
Live It!
Spend a day noticing the different rules around us from traffic rules, to school rules, to household rules. Why do we have them? Talk about it. Hey, even your pets have rules to keep them safe.
