Words to Treasure
Jesus finished saying all these things. The crowds were amazed at his teaching. That’s because he taught like one who had authority. He did not speak like their teachers of the law.
Matthew 7:29
Carey hadn’t laughed so hard in a long time. Her sides hurt from laughing. Every kid at church was laughing. These guys were so funny. But they also understood kids. When they talked about God, Carey understood what they were talking about. Sometimes at church she didn’t understand everything her pastor said because he used big words and he was a little boring. But these guys she could understand because they talked kid.
It was kind of like that for the people of Israel when Jesus spoke to them. He talked about things they understood. He explained things in ways they could understand. Suddenly they understood new and important things about God because Jesus understood exactly how to explain it to them. He wasn’t boring. He told stories. People everywhere were amazed at his teaching. Jesus so got them. And they so got Jesus.
Live It!
If somebody is teaching you about God, Jesus, or the Bible and you don’t understand what they’re trying to say, ask to have it explained again in another way so you can understand. Wanting to understand or wanting to know more about God is important. You have a right to understand. Don’t worry about looking foolish. The disciples were constantly asking Jesus to explain things over and over again until they understood it. You’re in good company. So go ahead and say, “I don’t understand. Could you please explain it a different way?” And somebody will.
