No Surprise

Words to Treasure

We are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true.

Luke 18:31

York knocked on the door loudly. A voice from inside called, “Let me guess. Don’t say anything.” There was a long pause. “It’s York!” “How’d you know it was me?” York talked to the door.

York’s older cousin Tim opened the door. “Your mom just called to say you were coming over. Hey, you want to take a milk run in my new car?” York had been waiting for an invitation to ride in Tim’s new sports car. Tim jumped straight into his convertible without opening the door. York was about to try. “Stop! Use the door.”

That’s kind of like the way it was in Jerusalem when Jesus came to town. No, Jesus did not drive a convertible. But people should have been expecting him because they were given enough warning. For hundreds of years, God’s prophets had been telling people exactly how Jesus would come to earth and what would happen. But when the time came, even though Jesus did everything the prophets and God’s laws said he would do, people were still confused about him. They didn’t expect him then, or they thought he’d look different. Hello! Heaven to earth — weren’t you guys listening earlier?

People in Bible Times

A teacher and leader named Nicodemus had many questions about Jesus. Jesus seemed surprised that such a smart guy didn’t understand what the prophets had said about the coming Savior. (See John 3:1 – 20.)
