Words to Treasure
Children, obey your parents as believers in the Lord. Obey them because it’s the right thing to do.
Ephesians 6:1
The shopping mall suddenly got very quiet. The only sound was Angela’s own heart pounding loudly. She wondered if anybody else could hear. Her aunt winked. “I’ll sign the form if you want to get another little earring in your ear. My treat.”
Angela really wanted a cute little sparkly stud on the top part of her ear. But she also knew her mom and dad felt that having one piercing in each ear was enough. But her aunt was an adult, and if she said it was okay — then wasn’t it? Angela stood in the doorway of the shop torn between what she wanted and what she knew her parents wanted for her.
Sometimes we make up a good reason to do something we know isn’t what we should do. Like doing something we know our parents absolutely would disapprove of. And just because another adult will let you, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Remember, your parents trust you to act the same way with other people as you would when they’re with you. The Bible teaches to honor your parents. And honor means to respect. Doing stuff behind their back doesn’t sound like a whole lot of honoring going on. Respect is best.
Did You Know?
Did you know that respect goes both ways? The Bible also says parents shouldn’t be unfair or overly difficult with their children. Really!!
