Words to Treasure

There is a time for everything. There’s a time for everything that is done on earth.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

The cabin was a riot of flinging pillows and smelly pajamas. Cabin “Raptor Claw” was having a candy bar pig-fest and pillow fight. Boys were being knocked off bunks and dropping like flies. Candy wrappers littered the floor. But in the corner, Holland was reading his science book quietly. That’s what Holland always did. There were some seriously good times that he was missing out on. There were lifelong friends waiting to be made if only he’d put down the book.

Jason sat beside Holland. “Do you want some of my saltwater candy?” Holland shook his head, not looking up. “Do you want to have a pillow fight?” Holland just turned a page. Jason snatched the book out of his hands and tossed it out the window.

Holland couldn’t believe it. “What are you doing?!” Jason wrote something on his hand and showed it to Holland. His hand read. “Read this! I’m trying to be your friend.”

Wanting to learn more about the world is great, but don’t let that stop you from being part of the world. Balancing fun, friends, and study is important. Don’t let one activity take over everything else.

Do you know what a real bookworm is? Well, there are over 5,000 insects that you could describe as bookworms or book lice. But the most common is a little wingless insect that loves to eat the paste or glue used to hold books together.
