Good Reputation

Words to Treasure

God was kind to me and helped me. So the king gave me what I asked for.

Nehemiah 2:8

Diego was helping his dad fix the boat dock at the cabin. He had worked really hard all day, hardly saying anything. Finally his dad asked, “What’s on your mind?”

Diego swatted a mosquito. “I was wondering if maybe Pete, Jerry, and I could take the rowboat out to Jug Island and camp overnight?”

His dad rustled around in the bag of nails. “Just you three on the island alone?”

“Yes, sir.”

His dad thought about it. “Well, you’ve always been a responsible camper. You’ve worked hard the last couple of weeks, helping with things around the cabin. Given your trustworthy reputation, I’ll say yes. But you must have life jackets on at all times in the boat.”

Diego reached for more nails. “Thanks, Dad.”

“Thank yourself. You’ve always been responsible, and that calls for some type of reward.”

How you handle yourself in the past also reflects on what you’ll be able to do in the future. If you’re not responsible and trustworthy in past things, chances are there’ll be no cool rewards in your future either. Think about it.

Nehemiah wanted to go home to help rebuild the city of Jerusalem, but he was worried about what the king would say. Good thing for him that he was a good and faithful servant to King Artaxerxes, because the king didn’t hesitate to give Nehemiah permission to go.
