Words to Treasure
“You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said.
1 Samuel 13:13
Suddenly the wheel wouldn’t turn, and Ben was heading straight for a mailbox. His soapbox car was out of control. Ben held on tight as he heard the crunch of his cart hitting the box and felt the jerk of coming to a sudden stop. He got out of the car. The entire front was busted up. This was not good. He and his dad had only finished it last night and already it was wrecked.
His dad inspected the damage. “Ben, I told you we had a few more things to check before you could test it. Why didn’t you wait for me?”
Ben didn’t have a good answer for that one. He had made a big mistake.
It’s easy to make mistakes when we want to get something done in a hurry or we just don’t want to wait any longer to do something important. Sometimes waiting is the most important thing you can do.

King Saul knew he should have waited until Samuel got there to make an offering to God. But the prophet was late, so the king did it himself. After all, he had a war to fight and he wanted to get started. But he disobeyed God, and that was a big lose-your-kingdom mistake. Obeying God from the start is never a mistake.
