Bragging Not So Good

Words to Treasure

Joseph had a dream. When he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.

Genesis 37:5

The football team smelled, they were tired, and they had just lost the game. Thomas pulled off his football helmet. “I had a great game. Did you see me out there?” His teammates had just taken a beating, and they didn’t want to hear it. For some of the guys, this had been the worst game they had ever played. Thomas grabbed the last bottle of water from the big Styrofoam barrel. “I did moves that I didn’t even know I had.”

Douglas slicked his sweaty hair back. “We lost, Thomas.”

“Well, yeah. Because of you, not because of me.”

You may be good at what you do. And maybe even God has told you that you’re something special. But sometimes saying it to other people just might be the wrong move. Bragging about your present or future successes might not go over well with everybody.

People in Bible Times

Joseph was his father’s favorite and that kind of upset his brothers. But to make matters worse, Joseph had these crazy dreams that revealed that some day he would be a really, really, really important person, more important than his older brothers. Joe’s important talk didn’t go over well with the bros. They sold the kid into slavery and packed him off to Egypt. (See Genesis 37.)
