Secretly Glad

Words to Treasure

Don’t be happy when your enemy falls. When he trips, don’t let your heart be glad. The Lord will see it, but he won’t be pleased.

Proverbs 24:17 – 18

Tom was in big trouble for playing at the old abandoned farmhouse. He wasn’t allowed in there because it was dangerous. Drew was sitting on the stairs listening to his big brother get a gigantically long lecture.

Drew smiled to himself and was kind of happy inside. He wasn’t sure why, but when his brother was in trouble it made him feel as if he was the good, special kid in the family. He enjoyed it when his brother was in trouble.

His dad walked into the hallway and caught him listening on the steps. Drew looked up, trying to look as innocent as an angel. “I would never go to the farmhouse, Dad,” said Drew.

Dad didn’t look as impressed as he should be. “But you would sneak cookies from the cookie jar. We’ll talk about that later.” His dad started up the stairs but stopped. “Drew?”

“Yes, Dad?”

“Being happy about your brother being unhappy is wrong.” Dad walked up the stairs.

That didn’t work out quite the way Drew had planned. He wasn’t the good, special kid after all.

Speaking of ancient, old houses, how would you like to sleep on the roof in the summer or keep goats, sheep, and other animals in your basement in the winter? That’s what many kids in ancient Israel did.
