Just Doing My Thing

Words to Treasure

We have only done our duty.

Luke 17:10

Julie wiped her hands with a rag. “Hey, Dad, my dirt bike’s stored for the winter. I replaced the oil, removed the battery and spark plugs, drained the gas tank, and waxed the paint.”

“Good,” her dad said without looking up.

“Good? That’s all you’re going to say? That was a lot of work.”

Her dad sat back. “It is your dirt bike, right?” Julie nodded. “It is your job to get it stored and ready for next season. Right?”

“Yeah.”

“Now when you do something really out of the ordinary, like painting the entire house, I’ll have something big to say.”

Julie rolled her eyes. “Okay, I get the point. I shouldn’t expect praise for something I should do anyway.”

Her dad smiled. “You’re one smart kid.”

Don’t expect a big parade or party for doing right things. Why? Because that’s the way we’re supposed to behave all the time. You don’t expect your parents to throw you a party every day for brushing your teeth. Doing what’s right is just an everyday, ordinary thing.

Kids in ancient times had daily chores too, such as gathering fuel for the fire or carrying water from the well. Children also weeded and watered the grape vines or gardens. Many children spent their days herding and watching over the family’s sheep and goats.
