Words to Treasure
God rested from his work. Those who enjoy God’s rest also rest from their work. So let us make every effort to enjoy that rest.
Hebrews 4:10 – 11
Abel opened his eyes and stared at the pattern on the side of the bowl on the table beside him. It was his chicken curry dinner. He had actually fallen asleep at the dinner table. This was crazy. Between hockey, soccer, church activities, school, homework, music lessons, and his paper route, there didn’t seem to be enough time in the day. Abel was exhausted. Was he actually enjoying it all, or was he just surviving?
Good question. God really enjoyed creating the universe, but afterward did he rush out and do something else? Absolutely not. God took time out to relax, rest, and enjoy his creation. In fact, he told us that at least one day out of seven we should stop everything and take a break from work. God knows the importance of just hanging out.
In our busy, busy world we forget to stop. And that isn’t good. If we don’t leave any time for rest, we make our minds, body, and spirit tired. We can even make ourselves sick! That’s called burnout. If you can’t stay awake to eat dinner, maybe it’s time to rethink and reorganize for some downtime. It’s important!
Did You Know?
Did you know a big part of downtime is sleep time? If we don’t get enough of it, we get sick. Have you ever stayed up really late and felt kind of grumpy in the morning? That’s your brain telling you, “Hey! I need more downtime.” Sleep, got to have it.
