Play It

Words to Treasure

Sing a new song to him. Play with skill, and shout with joy.

Psalm 33:3

The school band was rocking the building down. They were loud, they were good, and they were giving everybody a good show. Then the band stopped playing, because it was time for Matthew to do his trumpet solo. Now it was just him, his trumpet, and the audience. He started out really slowly, but soon his fingers were flying as the music got faster. It felt like the whole world was just Matthew and his trumpet, and everybody else had melted away. Then it was over, but Matthew realized the crowd was silent. He got worried for a minute. They didn’t like it? Then suddenly the crowd stood up and went wild.

Mr. Higgins, the conductor, walked over and told Matthew to take a bow. Matthew did. When the crowd had quieted down, Mr. Higgins talked into the microphone. “What you just heard was composed by our talented trumpet player, Matthew Carson.” The audience clapped wildly again.

God created a world full of natural music such as birds singing, rivers roaring, and rain pattering on tree leaves. But God made people special. We want to create music and write songs.

Live It!

Do you sing or play an instrument? Try to write a song of your own the way that King David wrote songs to God. You could also write in your journal or compose a poem about how you feel about God.
