Rusted Out

Words to Treasure

I went past the vineyard of a man who didn’t have any sense. Thorns had grown up everywhere. The ground was covered with weeds.

Proverbs 24:30 – 31

Brock pulled his bike out of the garage, but he wasn’t happy. This was not a bike to be proud of. How could he go on a bike trip with the guys with this rusted junkyard bike?

“Dad!” Brock called his dad over from waxing the car. “I need a new bike for this weekend. Look at mine! It’s all rusted and gross-looking. The guys are going to laugh at me.”

His dad looked the bike over. “It wouldn’t be rusty if you didn’t leave it outside in the rain all the time would it? Would rust have something to do with the way you take care of your bike?”

This talk wasn’t going well. Brock bit his lip. “No new bike.”

“No new bike. But you have all week to fix up this bike. I’ll help you. But you have to learn to take care of what you have. This bike isn’t that old.”

Lesson learned: it’s important to take good care of the things you have. Respect the gifts God’s already given you before you ask for more or newer ones.

Discovering Archaeology

We have wheels on everything from cars and trains to airplanes. The first “wheels” were probably logs. people put a heavy object on logs and rolled it over the top of the logs. As the object rolled along, someone pulled a log from the back and moved it up front. Try it as an experiment at home by lining up a series of pencils.
