Using Your Head

Words to Treasure

Wise people see danger and go to a safe place. But childish people keep on going and suffer for it.

Proverbs 27:12

The boys stood on the slope of the biggest jump on the mountain ready to make boarding history. Three boys waited at the bottom to take photographs and videos. Jonathan took off his helmet and passed it to Bailey. “I know you don’t like helmets, but you’re going to get mega airtime on this jump.”

Bailey laughed, “No thanks. I’m good.” With that he pushed off. He pretty much knew that everything was going wrong at the top of the jump. He was off-balance and heading to one spectacularly bad landing. He wiped out for all the cameras to record for history.

The boys waited for Bailey to move. But he wasn’t moving. He was out cold with blood running down his forehead. Jonathan joined them. “David, go get help.”

After one sled ride down the hill, one ambulance ride to the hospital, one cutting off of a favorite shirt, one uncomfortable session of x-rays, and one long lecture from the doctor, Bailey was ready to go home for several days in bed.

Simple rule — extreme sports need extreme headgear. Wear your helmet. God gave you a great brain, so use it and protect it.

Hey, soldiers wore protective gear for the same reasons. The first helmets were probably made of thick leather and metal. The idea was to protect your head, face, and neck from all types of nasty damage. After all, your brain is your best weapon. Protect it!
