Family History

Words to Treasure

“May the Lord our God be with us, just as he was with our people who lived long ago.”

1 Kings 8:57

Megan looked through the family photo album and listened to the stories her grandmother told her. Her great-grandfather had once saved a family from freezing to death in a great snowstorm.

Megan was visiting all her older relatives to look at their photographs and listen to family stories. She brought a recorder so she could write the stories down later on her computer. Her mom and dad were helping her research her family tree, and they had discovered that their family had lived in this same little cove for hundreds of years. Her family had actually owned a tiny island off the coast for many, many years: George Island named after her great, great, great grandpa George.

Megan studied an old photograph of her great-great-grandmother and saw that they shared the same crooked smile. They could have been sisters.

Megan was saving family history and stories before they got lost forever. Family histories are full of amazing people and stories that can inspire us today. Talk to the elders in your family, and save those long-ago stories for the future.

Knowing your ancestral line was important in Bible times. It told people a lot about you, such as where you came from, what tribe your people were, and to whom you were related. Write the names of your parents, and then add grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents. See how many generations back you can go.
