Words to Treasure
I will pray with my spirit. But I will also pray with my understanding.
1 Corinthians 14:15
Wendy twirled her spaghetti noodles onto her fork, but then she stopped. She looked at her parents with a puzzled expression on her face. “Did we say grace?”
Her mother laughed, “Yes, don’t you remember?”
Wendy thought about it. “I don’t remember doing it.”
Her father slurped his noodles and made her giggle. “Maybe you should say it again.”
Sometimes we do things automatically. We say our prayers before we eat without thinking very much about it. We don’t really remember what we said to God because it was like a recording that we turned on and off.
It’s like someone phoning you with the same recorded message over and over again — a little rude and a little boring. God’s not big on mindless chatter and doing stuff without really thinking about it. So next time you talk to God, don’t be pushing any prerecorded message. Instead, really talk to him.
Live It!
Did you know Jesus said you don’t need a lot of fancy words to pray? Not at all. Why? Because your Father in heaven already knows what’s in your heart. So just talk to God. It’s nothing more complicated than that. (See Matthew 6:7.)
