Words to Treasure
Anything you did for one of the least important of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
Matthew 25:40
The small children skipped around them with their little hands out, but Marcus and Drew had run out of coins and little gifts. They were traveling with their parents in Africa, helping to build drinking wells for villages in the area. At each village, the boys gave the children gifts of candy, coins, or little toys. But today they didn’t have enough to go around. Marcus wished he had more to give the children as he waved goodbye and climbed into the truck. “Mom,” he said as he stared out the window of the truck, “there are so many families that need help. But we can’t help all of them. What are we going to do?”
His mom ruffled his hair. “A very kind lady named Mother Teresa said, ‘If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.’ So, we just help one person at a time. Then that one person can help somebody else. We all need to help each other. Remember when people helped us when our river flooded?” The boys nodded.
Marcus rolled down the truck window, took off his favorite baseball cap, and tossed it to a young boy as they drove past. The boy put the cap on and waved as they drove away.
Jesus and his disciples were watching people donating money to the temple. A rich man came and put in a large amount, but a poor widow put in only two small coins. Jesus asked the disciples who gave more. His answer? The widow, because she gave away almost all the money she had (see Mark 12:41 – 44).
