Right ’til It Hurts

Words to Treasure

Blessed are those who suffer for doing what is right. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

Matthew 5:10

Terry heard the noise of spinning tires on ice and snow. A lady was digging the wheels of her big car into a big snow bank. She was stuck. The last ski shuttle bus pulled into the snowy parking lot. Terry boarded the bus, but his shoulders slumped as he glanced back at the lady. Now she was out of her car walking around in high heels on the ice. She was going to break a leg. Terry got off the bus and unloaded his board — no incredible snowboarding for him today. He walked over, “Excuse me. Can I help you?” She looked so grateful. Terry glanced over as the bus drove up the mountain to the ski hill.

Doing what’s right sometimes isn’t fun or convenient. Sometimes doing what’s right can be the most difficult choice you’re ever going to make. That’s called “being dependable until it hurts bad.” But, on the upside, God is absolutely impressed with you.

Doing what’s right isn’t always easy. Take our friend Noah, for example. He was a good man who did everything God told him to do. He even built this outrageously huge boat and packed it full of animals. You can be sure his neighbors thought Noah was one raindrop short of a flood. It was hard, but Noah did what was right (see Genesis 6:9 – 22).
