The place White and Apophis had chosen for their little showdown was about a three-hour drive from Ontonagon. I had watched in awe as Orion did his magic secretary thing and managed to conjure up a car big enough for all of us from somewhere in White’s stable of excess. We had driven way too fast on the way there. I just closed my eyes and told myself that Orion had supernatural reflexes, so we would be fine. I think my new mind powers were the only reason we arrived in one piece.
The ride back was weird, to say the least. I still hadn’t really wrapped my mind around all the new information the fates had unleashed inside me, my relationships with any and all of the men in the car were in serious need of some attention, and on top of that, we were all exhausted. It was kind of an unspoken agreement that we just not talk about anything serious until we got home.
When we were about an hour away, the guys finally allowed me to take a bathroom break. It was kind of cute how they all took turns hovering. Even Derek, who still managed to make it look like he was just being civil, rather than like he actually gave a fuck. I had emerged from the gas station bathroom under the watchful glare of the human attendant, half-tempted to flash him my glowy god powers just to wipe that look off his face. Chike was buying snacks. The others were outside standing by the car.
I held the door for Chike and followed along behind him. “You know you’re not getting any of those sour gummy worms, right?” I informed him, eying his bag of goodies.
He looked down his shimmery nose at me. “Excuse me? I bought them.”
I snorted. “Technically, Orion bought them. But I’m sure it was White’s money. Don’t make me go over your head.”
He turned to reply, a teasing smile on his face. But I didn’t hear him.
A crushing weight pressed in on my senses, compressing my godspark inside me. Everything slowed, and my heart thundered in my ears. An arm wrapped around my middle, just under my breasts, squeezing the air from my lungs. Then, I was jerked out of reality.
My last glimpse of the Earth realm was the sight of the men below running toward where I’d been seconds before, horror painted on all their faces.
Then, my lungs collapsed, and everything went dark.
