THE NEXT DAY, MITCH strode into the café.
“Are you okay?” he asked Lauren.
“Yes.” She smiled at him.
They’d driven to the nearest police station last evening, gave a statement and once Robbie had been apprehended – still picking pizza dough off his face – they’d returned home. Lauren had called Mitch while at the station and although he’d wanted to drive up to meet her there, she’d told him she’d be okay.
He’d stayed over at the cottage last night, while Zoe had headed to Chris’s house.
“Detective Castern isn’t happy about this.” He grinned. “He’s stomping about his office and doesn’t seem to care who notices. I’m just glad you and Annie are all right. And Zoe.”
“That’s what you said last night,” she teased softly.
He leaned over the counter to kiss her.
“I think I’ll start saying that every night.”
Annie wandered over to the counter.
“Brrt,” she said approvingly.
“What did I miss?” Zoe zoomed over.
“We’ve caught another killer,” Lauren said. “That’s all.”
“He’ll be going away for a while.” Mitch frowned. “I feel a bit sorry for him, but however much of a jerk his dad was, it doesn’t excuse his murder.” He glanced at Lauren. “Our kids wouldn’t be like that.”
“They wouldn’t?” she asked softly.
“No.”
“If you two are going to be all gooey, I’ll call Chris.” Zoe sat down at a small table and took out her phone. “Hey!” She turned around in her chair. "Maybe we can all go to the bistro tomorrow night.”
“Brrt!”
“It would definitely make a change from a pizzeria.” Zoe grinned.
“Especially since that was our second close call with a killer and pizza,” Lauren said with feeling.
“Brrt!”
