Putting it all together
So how do you go about sorting a collection of clothes into stylish outfits? It does take a bit of time and practice, but it can be great fun. There are a number of interdependent elements to a good outfit, so mix and match what you have, identify what's missing, then hunt it down!
- Colour category: You have decided on the colours that suit you, and in what proportions - stick with your palette.
- Colour combinations: Combine complementary or contrasting colours and aim for a balanced look - if you have mainly one colour, try to accent it with another.
- Patterns: Mix patterns carefully. It can look brilliant if you have a flair for it but if you are not sure, be safe and go for a patterned top with a plain skirt or trousers, or the other way round.
- Body shape: Think about what you have learnt about styles that flatter your body shape.
- Shape mixing: If you have a loose, floaty top, choose straight trousers or a skirt, or vice versa.
- Accessorise: Keep your accessories in balance. Need a splash of colour? A coloured bag, scarf or shoes could be just the thing. Don't make the mistake of thinking you have to have bag and shoes the same - that's 1950s thinking. Lift colours from your outfit and it will work.
- Jewellery: Subtle and delicate or a bold statement? Match it to what the outfit needs.
