First, let's get the practical layering out of the way. To keep warm and dry outdoors you need a thin base layer, a thin windproof layer, a warm insulating layer and a waterproof outer layer.
That's not what we are talking about here! We are looking for a style statement.
Good examples include dresses or skirts over jeans; a short-sleeved T-shirt over a long-sleeved plain T-shirt; a sequinned shrug over a strappy top; a velvet fitted jacket over a beaded top. Use belts and jewellery but don't make the overall effect too fussy.
