Chapter 2

People were so predictable. At first he watched them for weeks to get to know their patterns. Then he learned it wasn’t necessary. People did pretty much the same thing every day, with little variation. If they were the type to forget things, they forgot things every day. If they were the type to be late, they were always late. If they stopped for coffee on Thursdays because the morning meeting was later that day, they stopped every Thursday. It was one of the only useful things his father had taught him. People never change.

Now he only watched for a few days. Enough to get the lay of the land. Enough to know their habits. Enough to make sure he hadn’t been wrong. He was never wrong.
