to think I was well qualified.

it comes to riding a push bike at over 100 mph,
Dave reckoned that ‘you’ve got to be kind of
nuts to do it’ and he seemed to think I was well
qualified . . .
When I asked him if he was bothered that we
were out to break his record, Dave simply said,
‘Not at all. I encourage you to go for it. You’ve
got good people behind you. You can do it.’
Dave inspired me with confidence. He was

roughly the same age as me when he set the
record and, having just finished a racing season,
he was fit as a butcher’s dog. My basic fitness
is pretty good but I knew I had to work hard
to make sure I was spot on for the attempt.
I wasn’t about to let everyone down by not
putting in the graft on the fitness front. Dave
spent six weeks getting himself ready to set the
record on the M42 and I had about the same
to get myself ready to break it.
