Wednesday Afternoon–Pasadena, CA.

Courtney checks the clock on the food actualizer. It’s afternoon and Rick has not called. He always calls to check in. Courtney knows Rick has been stressed about work. He tries not to show it, but she can tell. The grant means so much to him. She doesn’t know much about Rick’s proposal, but she knows it’s important to him and their family.

Courtney’s band chimes and a semitransparent display projects in the air. Robs image dashes her hopes, but Courtney touches the display to accept the call. “Have you heard from our boy yet? How did the presentation go?” asks Rob.

“No, he hasn’t called. I’ve called, but it goes directly to voice mail.”

“That doesn’t sound like Rick. He’s good about checking in, isn’t he?”

“Yes, he should have called by now.”

“I bet those government boys loved his presentation and have him tied up in meetings. I’m sure he’ll call as soon as he can.”

“He’s probably being lavished with praise, rubbing elbows with all the famous scientists and government officials while being treated to a luscious five-course dinner with fine wines and white tablecloths. Can you believe they flew him business class? He sent a message during his morning run. They had an executive AutoCar pick him up at the airport.”

Rob gives a wolf whistle. “Wow! Movie star treatment. Must be nice to be a famous scientist. Guess I’ll never know.”

“Yes, he’s getting doted over like a rock star, while I’m stuck at home trying to wrangle two wild kids.”

“How are you and the kids?”

Courtney puts clean dishes in the cupboard as she speaks. “They’re at school; should be home soon.”

“Hang in there, sweetie. Let me know if you hear from our boy. I’m sure once he’s had enough star treatment, he’ll call.”
