READ Psalm 119:17–24. 17 Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word. 18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. 19 I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me. 20 My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times. 21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed, those who stray from your commands. 22 Remove from me their scorn and contempt, for I keep your statutes. 23 Though rulers sit together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees. 24 Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.
THE WORD IS OUR COUNSELOR. One way to face isolation (verse 19), scorn, contempt, and slander (verses 22–23) is by seeking out counselors. The Bible itself can become a wonderful counselor (verse 24) but only if you are able to see “wonders” in it (verse 18). Paul speaks of a spiritual veil or covering over our minds (2 Corinthians 3:14–18). We may see various facts in the Bible, but without the Spirit’s help we can’t see the gloriousness and wonder of the Bible’s teaching, and of Christ himself. The Spirit can remove the veil (2 Corinthians 3:18). Ask God to open your eyes to the beauties and glories of Scripture (verse 18). Then it can become the physician of your soul.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you have been called Wonderful Counselor, and indeed you are! But it is within the pages of your Word that I have found your priceless advice and comfort. Open my eyes to understand the Scriptures so I can receive more and more of your counsel. Amen.
