READ Psalm 119:105–112. 105 Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. 107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, LORD, according to your word. 108 Accept, LORD, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws. 109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. 110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. 111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. 112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

THE WORD MY LAMP. You need a lamp for walking if the place is too dark for your unaided eyes. So life itself is too dark for our unaided wisdom. We will go astray without the illumination of God’s Word (verse 105). The Word will be a lamp to you only if you follow it nonbegrudgingly even when you don’t like what it shows you. “My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end” (verse 112). “Joy without obedience is frivolity; obedience without joy is moralism.”129 Remember Jesus in the darkness of his temptation (Luke 4:1–13). Every time Satan tried to envelop Christ in darkness, Christ used Scripture after Scripture to dispel it.

Prayer: Lord, let me be so immersed in your Word that, as they did for Jesus, your words spring to my mind, interpreting my moment, guiding my choices, and strengthening my heart. Amen.
