let my people go

Afterward Moses and Aaron went
to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the
LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go,
so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.’”

EXODUS 5:1

The other day I was thinking about this verse and it struck me that the story of Moses is similar to the story of George Washington. Moses led his people to freedom from slavery to the Egyptians, and they then celebrated in the desert. Washington led the people in a revolution, to establish a new country, and we celebrate every summer on the Fourth of July. They both courageously and humbly did what was asked of them or what they thought was right. It’s easy to celebrate Independence Day and think that leaders like Washington, or even Moses, were extra-special. The reality is that these men were very human, imperfect, and prone to messing things up (just like you and me). Yet, they both led people to freedom because they weren’t afraid to act, to obey, and to be different.
