bye-bye boogie man

For I am the LORD, your God …
Do not fear; I will help you.

ISAIAH 41:13

Ibabysit for a family in my church. They have a three-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl. Once, I just had the little boy. We made chicken and stars and grilled cheese sandwiches, played Pick-Up Sticks, watched a movie, and played with his motorcycles. He was all smiles until it was time to go to bed. After reading four books, saying a prayer, and tucking him in, I went to turn off the light. When I looked at him to ask if he was all set, I saw his eyes filling with tears, and his little lip began to quiver. The age of three is a very tender age. It’s when kids are on the verge of understanding a lot of things, like why sticking every object smaller than their pinky in their mouth is not a good idea or how to climb the counter to the cookie jar without mom noticing. It is also close to the age that most children come to realize that they need a savior. They may not completely understand the true significance of the decision, but they know enough to be afraid and need someone to make them feel better. I didn’t leave the little boy alone in the dark, and God won’t leave us either. When we have the Lord as our Savior, we don’t need to be afraid of silly things. He is at our side holding our hand, and we can count on Him always.

Lord, when I am afraid, please hold my hand.
Life is too scary without You.
