a new definition of purity

For man looketh on the outward appearance,
but the LORD looketh on the heart.

1 SAMUEL 16:7 (KJV)

When I hear the word purity, I think of sexual purity. In the Christian world that is the kind of purity that is most often talked about. In the general culture, the word purity seems sort of old-fashioned and not relevant. But both in church and in secular society, there is not much emphasis on spiritual or mental purity. I think that this sort of purity, the kind that you cannot necessarily see or label outright, is really important. This kind of purity might mean not looking at, listening to, or reading things that would draw us away from God or take our emotions and minds to places that are not healthy. At times, I choose to avoid reading books or magazines that are probably fascinating, but that I know contain impure things. I try to remember that God sees my heart and that I want my thoughts and emotions to be worthy of Him.

Sometimes my thoughts wander
so far from You. Lord, I pray that what
I think and feel will pleasing to You.
