learning hope

The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

PSALM 147:11

Afriend of mine was in a horrific car accident, and she had major damage to her brain and went into a coma. The news from the doctors was discouraging; the said she probably wouldn’t make it through the night. Her family was discouraged and quickly lost hope. Friends came and shared with them numerous verses in the Bible. The verse in Psalm 147 particularly stood out to them, and after they heard it started to hope again. My friend made it through that night and all the other nights afterwards. After about six months of waiting and praying, her family was told that she was waking from her coma and she would live. After leaving the hospital my friend went through months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. It wasn’t easy, but now she drives and does all sorts of average teenage stuff. My friend’s story reminds me that hope is such a necessary ingredient in life, and it is because of Jesus Christ’s death on the cross that we have hope. I long to have the kind of hope throughout my life that my friend’s family exercised during the months she was in a coma. That kind of hope is real; it is an earnest expectation for what is to come.

Lord, I want to be hopeful. I want to believe
that good things can happen. Help me to have that belief.
