ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Books are the work of a great many people other than the person whose name is on the spine.

Manuscript readers and friends: Mairead Case (whose kindness and support helped me to finish this book), Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Alfred Soto, Ian McDuffie, Michaelangelo Matos, Elizabeth Sandifer, Ned Raggett, Kate Izquierdo, Alex Reed, Jack Womack. Special thanks to: Ryan Faulds, who volunteered to edit early drafts; Nicholas Currie, aka Momus, who provided theories and quotes, as in the previous book; Stephen Ryan; Owen Hatherley; Agata Pyzik, guide to Warszawa; Greg Smith, guide to Bowie’s chord progressions; Nigel “Nacho” Marshall, who should be the Bowie estate’s film archivist. A few collaborators of Bowie’s have clarified stories over the years. In particular I’d like to thank Reeves Gabrels (and Susan Gabrels), Dave Gutter, Mark Plati, and Maria Schneider.

Old friends and favorite locals: Morgan and Corey Griffin (and Ada and Alice), Mike Slezak and Iyassu Sebhat, Kristen and Joe Holmgren, Christopher and Susan George, Bill and Jess Madden-Fuoco, Mark Leccese, Dan Costello and Brittany Shahmehri, Alex Abramovich, Michael Dumiak, Adam Zucker and Heather Abel, Zack Lesser and Taije Silverman, Burns Maxey and Matt Medeiros, Seth Lepore, Sharon Esdale. To my mother and father, Don and Barbara O’Leary, and to the rest of my family. And to dear Lucy.

I’ve made many friends because of this project, by far its greatest reward: Rahawa Haile, Andy Zax, Lisa Jane Persky, Douglas Wolk, Tom Ewing, Dave Depper, Matt Fraction, Kate Koliha, Nikola Tamindzic, Alison Jean Baker, Jonathan Bogart, Brendan Byrne, Deanna Kerry, Sylvia Korman, Thomas Inskeep, Keith Harris, Michael Daddino, Jody Beth LaFosse, Annie Zaleski, Matt Wardlaw, Mike Heyliger, Caryn Rose, Maura Johnston, Chris Molanphy, Liz Carlson, Kathy Fennessy, Norman Be, Evan “Funk” Davies, Christian Finnegan, Mike Duquette, Nate Patrin, Rob Sheffield, David Cantwell, Charles Hughes.

To Nicholas Pegg, whose Complete David Bowie is the essential Bowie tome and who has been gracious regarding my esoteric takes on an artist he knows far more about. To Tariq Goddard, who kindly endured my delays in finishing the previous book as well my fresh set of delays for this one.

I’m often asked if David Bowie read the blog or the earlier book. No idea. I never got a single indication that he did. He was internet-savvy enough that I feel he must have been aware that the blog existed, at least. If he did read it, I hope he got a kick out of it, though I imagine he more likely cracked up about how completely wrong I got something. The world is a lesser place without him.
