“Debbie, can we talk?”
“Sure. I just picked up your secret fax. That sure got the attention of my office. Thanks a bunch.”
“I thought that would wake up the office.”
“Are you all right? Are you in danger?”
“No danger, just excited.” I filled her in on what I discovered.
“You mean to tell me that Stanley recorded this conversation without either of you knowing it?”
“You bet he did!”
“The law in Colorado says that if you are taping a conversation with another person in this state—whether it is surreptitiously or not—you must inform that person that the conversation is being taped. Since Stanley can’t speak, the taped conversation could be admitted in court. It’s a stretch, but it may not come to it if Brian hears the tape.”
“Brilliant, just brilliant. I just can’t believe my luck.”
“Have you given Stanley a big treat?”
“No. Stanley is with Ron and Ginny, but I will when I see him.”
“Please hug him for me. Can you get that cassette tape and the player to me tonight or tomorrow morning?”
“Probably tomorrow morning. I’ll ask Ron if he can deliver it to you.”
“You need to rest. I’ll call Ginny and speak with her. Someone will pick up that tape and the recorder from you. I’ll take care of it.”
“I need to call Jack’s office as soon as we hang up. I need to make an addendum to your statement to include the tape and the recorder. Most likely, CBI will analyze it to determine that it wasn’t doctored in any way.”
“Is all this extra work going to cost me extra?”
“And to think I only asked you for a dollar retainer.
“What would you like from me besides money?”
“I would like the dinner you promised that we would have after all of this is done,” she said without any hesitation.
