Officially the Asian economic crisis was not to blame. Airbus described it as “only a blip that will have no effect on our long-term planning.” Unofficially, however, Airbus was still looking for risk-sharing partners, particularly in Asia, and the financial meltdown of the region’s Tiger economies had not only impacted long-term fleet expansion plans, but had dampened investment across all industries, including aerospace.
