Love Me As Myself
To love me as myself and as your soul,
to cherish and be inspired turn by turn,
to teach me of myself and then to learn,
gives freedom its more supple role.
For friendship usually leaves me as I am,
while passion only loves itself in me,
our oppositions rage until both flee,
and settling dust is scrawled in epigram.
So treasure of the sacred host speak out,
in every tongue your ancient age can find.
We’re schooled to understand and change our part,
for though we move through ridicule and doubt
we will consent when longed-for words that bind
speak forth to fuse the shaking in the heart.
