If He Is Gone
If I may not have him in my bed,
Then just across the room,
And if not that, then down the hall,
Our windows open on the same tall bloom;
And if I may not have him in my house,
Then down the road will have to do,
Around the corner, in the village,
Or out into the country, perhaps a mile or two.
But if he may not be as near as this,
My heart will still be song,
To know that he is homeward bound,
To even know that he is far, and will be long;
And if I knew that he would never come again,
But for another knew the lover’s anguished ache,
I still could smile, knowing him to be,
But if he is nowhere now, if he is gone,
my heart will break.
