BRITA HOLMQUIST

Brita Holmquist was born in New York City, attended the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and for two years studied in Florence, Italy with Richard Serrin.

Holmquist has shown in galleries throughout New England and presently shows in Maine with the Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Falmouth, the Camden Falls Gallery in Camden, and the Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill. Her work is in the collections of the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland and the Portland Museum of Art in Portland.

Holmquist cofounded 10x10 in 1989, an artists’ group of ten, and the Peregrine Press in 1991, a cooperative artists’ press in Portland. She was the founder, and is the ongoing director of the annual Long Ledge Ladies Retreat of artists.

In addition to being a working painter, Holmquist has served on the board of the Maine Festival, the Portland Arts Council, the Artists’ Advisory Panel to the Maine Commission, the Artists’ Advisory Council to Maine Coast Artists, and the Advisory Board to the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art. She lives in Cumberland with her Florentine husband Roberto Bonechi and designs earthenware and catalogs for his Italian ceramics importing company, R. Bonechi Imports. In addition, she runs her own faux finishing business ‘Suspended Belief’ of both exterior and interior finishes and murals.
