Jenna didn’t understand what the woman was after. Not really.

And how she had found her in this flat, when not even Jenna knew where it was. The men had said they were in one of the finer neighbourhoods of the city, but Jenna never saw anything of her surroundings, so what difference did it make where they were? All she could think about was that the woman’s fiery red hair reminded her of her sisters. They were almost all redheads in her family – Jenna was the exception. A pale brunette in a sea of copper.

The woman said she was a police officer, and that Nadia had been hurt – Jenna had enough English to understand that. But why had she come here? Had Jenna been tricked by the man who had said he was coming? Was she going to lose an hour’s work now? When she asked the woman, she gave Jenna cash. So not a cop. Just a crazy lady. Perhaps someone who wanted to wreck things for the people that Jenna worked for? Some journalist who wanted to write about sex work?

When the woman tried to warn Jenna, she pretended not to understand. She pretended that she had never heard of any peepshow. The woman didn’t really seem to believe her, but what could she do?

She didn’t want to think about how Nadia was doing right now. She knew it was horrible, that it was amongst the worst stuff you could do. But the money would change her life. The others who had been asked had mostly been long in the tooth, all used up, resigned, said yes because nothing mattered any longer. But Jenna was happy to have been asked after such a brief time in the city. It meant she would be able to get out of this while she was still young. She would be able to start over.

No matter how awful it would be, she was still grateful for the opportunity.

Better an intense but brief hell, rather than a protracted one.

All she had to do was put it behind her once she had healed.

Once the woman had finally left, Jenna called Micha and asked whether there were any problems. But he placated her and told her everything was on track.

She didn’t need to worry.

She would get her money.

The peepshow was going ahead.

And then all her problems would be gone for good.
