Chapter 24

The next morning, China yawned and opened her eyes. She smiled as soon as their eyes met. China was happier than she ever could have imagined. She had the family and love she’d always wanted. “Hi.”

“Hi, baby.” Alexander rose from his seat and came to sit on the side of China’s bed. “How do you feel?”

“Happy,” she said, pulling his hand to her lips for a kiss.

“Me, too. Any cramping?” He brushed her hair from her face.

“No.”

“That’s great. The doctor told me if you weren’t cramping when you woke up, everything should be fine.” China watched as his face relaxed. His joy and sense of relief were overwhelming, yet she could still see how tense he was.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, frowning.

“Nothing.”

China narrowed her eyes. “This is me you’re talking to, Alex. What’s going on?”

Alexander sighed. “What do you remember about the accident?”

“Umm...we left the park and I was driving down that long road when a van...” China frowned.

“What about the van?” he pushed.

“I think they tried to pass me, and then I guess...they must have lost control because they hit us.”

Alexander held her hand. “You were intentionally run off the road.”

“What...why?”

“I don’t know but we’re going to find out, and whoever did this, we’ll make them pay. I promise. The police will want to talk to you about what happened, too. In the meantime, everyone in the family’s getting a little extra security.”

“What does that mean?”

“Wednesday is making arrangements for us all to have twenty-four-hour protection,” he explained.

“Do you really think that’s necessary?” she asked. Her voice cracked as she sat up in her bed.

Alexander cupped her face with both hands and said, “Please don’t worry. I’m going to keep my family safe.”

“Your family.” China smiled. “I like the sound of that.”

“Good, because I can’t wait any longer.” Alexander reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a large diamond engagement ring. “I know this isn’t the most romantic place but...”

China’s eyes grew wide. “Alex...”

“I love you so much. In fact, I had ‘Alex loves China’ engraved on the inside, just in case you ever forget.” He tilted the ring so she could read it. “You’ll always be my baby. China Edwards, will you marry me? Please...”

China presented Alexander with a shaky left hand as tears ran down her face. “Yes...”

Alexander placed the ring on her finger and kissed her hand. He lowered his head to her stomach. “Did you hear that, baby? Mom said yes.”

China laid her head back and laughed. “Alex...”

“Yes, my love.”

China’s whole face lit up. “We’re having a baby.”
