Nouns

Nouns are a person, place, or a thing.

Ex. Morgan read a book in the school. Morgan is a noun because it is a person’s name. Book is a noun because it is a thing. School is a noun because it is a place.

Directions: Underline the nouns in the sentences below.

Adverbs

An adverb is a word that describes an action verb. An adverb describes how, when, and where an action happens. In this exercise we will work on how the action happens.

Example: Morgan quickly did her homework.

How did Morgan do her homework? Answer: quickly.

Directions: An action verb is described in each sentence. Circle the adverb that describes the underlined verb.

  1. Trey carefully placed his train on the track.

  2. Morgan and Brooke swam lazily in the pool.

  3. The class cheerfully sang songs in chorus.

  4. Chanté accidentally spilled her milk.

  5. Bill grumbled loudly during the test.

  9. Drake stamped his feet angrily.

Pronouns

A pronoun is the word that takes the place of a noun. Some common pronouns include: he, she, it, we, they, them, us, our, his, her, and I.

Directions: Rewrite each sentence. Change the underlined word or words to a pronoun.

  1. Morgan helped the whole class with their work.

  2. Trey played tag with Brooke and Bill.

  3. Miss Nelson cleaned off her board.

  4. The dog did not bite anyone.

  5. Mama and Papa let me help paint the fence.

Prepositions

Prepositions link nouns, pronouns, and phrases together. They are also the leading word In the prepositional phrase. Some common prepositions include: under, over, in, out, between, up, down, by, onto, to, into, and through.

Example: After dinner, we went to the movies. Where did we go? Answer: to the movies.
