Abner shuffled down the street, hunched over, eyes downcast. One leg in front of the other, he told himself on his daily, labored walks.
A noise behind him made Abner lurch sideways suddenly. A skateboarder zipped down the sidewalk, just missing him.
Abner remembered when he was able to run and skate. Now his arthritic body forced him to adopt his sluggish pace. He shook his head and continued with uncertain steps past an apartment building.
Watching Abner pass his window, Marshall steadied himself on his walker. Look at that guy stroll down the street, he thought, never a care.
