Astronaut David Bozian began his odyssey in space the week before. As he drifted outside the International Space Station in his pressure suit, he thought about NASA’s overly taxing psychological testing. He’d passed, but his belief in extraterrestrials made people edgy.
All crew members complained about the testing except Commander Hal Blount. “Wackos must be weeded out,” he’d said¸ “to protect the mission.”
He’d used similar words just before David left on his space walk.
“Can’t jeopardize the mission,” he’d said.
“Open the airlock, Hal,” David said, his station inspection completed.
“I’m sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
