Asking One Question

“I have no more doubts,” said the university researcher in the lab’s flickering light.

“Me either. This entity we’ve discovered has seemingly infinite power, prescience—”

“—And wisdom. But it won’t be here for long. Let’s formulate the one question we’ve been permitted to ask.”

“How about, ‘Is there life outside of earth?’”

“No. What if there’s just microbes? He’d just say ‘yes’.  We can’t ask a yes-no question. We should ask, ‘What is the nature of the highest form of life in the universe?’”

“That’s dumb. I’ll type in the question: What are the winning numbers for tomorrow’s Powerball Lottery?”
