The Promotion

When news of his boss’s promotion reached Wade, his sometimes slow thinking went into overdrive.

Bixby’s moving up, he thought. That means there’ll be a vacancy for supervisor. Me, Paul, and Stacy are in line for it.  Stacy’s no threat. Calls in sick on Mondays, always behind on projects, complains constantly.

Paul could be a problem. But he’s so conceited he’ll boast and exaggerate his accomplishments. I’ll win by being modest.

“Sorry, Wade,” said the HR manager a week later. “You were our first choice, but when you said we should consider Stacy, too, we had to question your judgment.”
