The Turbulent ’60s

Jimmy sat on the train staring dejectedly at the farms and villages that swept by the window. The Sixties, what a time to be drafted, he thought, with the country divided over war. Wearing his new uniform, he was heading for Boston where he’d join his unit and ship out.

He scanned a newspaper filled with stories of draft protests, rioting in New York, and mounting war casualties.

Jimmy dropped the paper and closed his watering eyes.

“Don’t worry,” said the man next to him. “The war’ll be over in no time, as soon as Lincoln puts Grant in charge.”
