Brett looked into Daisy’s soft brown eyes and stroked her head. The cold stainless steel table reflected light in the tiny room.
“Do we have to, doc?”
“She’s lived a full life and she’s not getting better. It’s best to put her down, now.”
“I know this is common. Everyone does it, but she’s been a wonderful companion. I really love her.”
“It’s not like this is the twenty-first century when there was still a little open space left on the planet. We euthanize your wife now and there’s a little more room, a little more air for everyone else.”
